Some buildings survive because they find another job. On Park Street, the former Jungle Country Club Hotel has spent far longer serving students than it spent welcoming resort guests.

Today it is Farragut Hall at Admiral Farragut Academy, south of Jungle Terrace in the wider historic Jungle. The academy explains that former hotel rooms on the second and third floors became dormitory rooms. That one detail makes the change unusually easy to picture: the building kept providing a place to stay, while the reason for staying changed.

An ambitious winter address

Walter P. Fuller’s hotel belonged to the west side’s 1920s resort-building era. Historian Scott M. Deitche, writing for The Mob Museum, dates its opening to February 10, 1926. His account names the McGee Sisters and Norman Mayer’s Jungle Serenaders among the opening entertainment.

Sources disagree on the opening year. The Museum of Florida History says the hotel opened in 1925, while Deitche gives February 10, 1926. The academy dates construction to 1925, but that detail does not resolve the conflicting opening dates. We retain both accounts here.

The hotel’s setting offered something a downtown address could not reproduce in quite the same way: a country-club landscape beside Boca Ciega Bay. In the sales imagination of the period, the surrounding recreation was part of the room’s appeal.

There is a temptation to let celebrity rumors do all the talking about a place like this. The more durable story is architectural and practical. A substantial building had been created, and later generations would have to decide what to do with it.

Wartime, then a new purpose

The Museum of Florida History records another phase: during World War II, the hotel and tents on its grounds housed Army Air Corps trainees. The resort landscape was drawn into wartime needs.

The academy arrived through a mid-1940s transition. Its present history page dates the Florida campus purchase to 1945; the alumni association instead records property acquisition in 1944 and a formal opening in January 1946. The accounts differ on the acquisition year, so the broader mid-1940s description is safest.

The school itself had begun in Pine Beach, New Jersey, in 1933. Establishing a Florida campus connected the old resort building to a new institutional story, one that continued long after the hotel business had ended.

A building that kept being useful

A hotel room becoming a dorm room is a small example of a large preservation idea: continued use can give an old building a future. Its history stays legible even as its daily routine changes.

The academy remains a working school. Historic interest is a reason to learn about the campus and respect its access arrangements, rather than assume the grounds are an open public attraction.

Seen from the neighborhood’s longer timeline, the hotel-to-school change also shifts our attention. Winter visitors are one set of people in the story. Students, teachers and staff are another, and they have added decades of their own.

The old Jungle hotel still has more than one chapter to tell. The classroom chapter is no longer the short one.
